Jaw Health FAQ
Over the last few decades our diets have been getting softer and softer, which has led to what some call a 'silent epidemic' of underdeveloped jaws.
Well one, it doesn’t look great. Two, if the jaw doesn’t develop properly the teeth don’t have space to grow into (which means the need for braces and dental work). Three, and this is the most severe one, an underdeveloped jaw can lead to obstructed airways which can in turn lead to snoring and sleep apnea later in life. Sleep apnea having a significant impact on quality of life.
If you’re an adult, not that much unfortunately as the jaw is already fully developed. Here’s a fun video to cheer you up Happy
But…for kids and teens there are three habits that can help with Jaw development:
- Chewing hard foods regularly, that’s where Jawsome snacks can help
- At rest, the mouth should be closed, tongue resting on the palette
- When sleeping breathing must happen exclusively through the nose
We must regularly chew hard foods and make sure to chew slowly and thoroughly on both sides of the mouth.
Your grandparents were right all along- chew your food properly!
The mechanical forces generated by chewing hard foods help the jaw grow to the right size and shape and helps teeth fit properly within the jaw.
It’s difficult to say exactly but the earlier the better. Our jaws are fully formed around 17 years old, so after that it’s difficult to have a significant impact.
Definitely, chewing hard foods has been shown to improve jawbone maintenance and has also been linked to improved cognitive function and immunity.
Although research on this is still in its infancy.
Definitely, here are a few books that might help:
- “Jaws: The Story of a Hidden Epidemic”, Sandra Kahn & Paul Ehrlich
- “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art”, James Nestor
- “If Your Mouth Could Talk": Dr Kami Hoss
*Disclaimer: We do realise we’re not going to magically create better jaw health on our own…but we do believe that swapping out softer, less healthy snacks with Jawsome can make some difference; and encourage teenagers and kids - at an age where they can still make a difference to their jaw health - to think about their diets more positively.
